Developing English and Spanish writing skills is an essential part of our academic program. 2019 was our second year implementing a Balanced Literacy Program in Elementary. Students reading levels have increased significantly and as time passes, we continue to see more students surpassing the average reading level in both Spanish and English.
Balanced Literacy relies on an intimate, personal relationship between the teacher and the student. Reading and writing partnerships, as well as small group work, are integral parts of the workshops. Students regularly share their writing and reading achievement with the school community through "Publishing Parties."
Assessment for learning is at the heart of this framework. Teachers confer with students daily to identify what students know and what the next steps in learning are.
